Inside the Authors' Studio with Medeia Sharif

It is time once again for this month's INSIDE THE AUTHORS' STUDIO and today's guest is the absolutely lovely Medeia Sharif. Please do not forget to comment on this blog for a chance to win her awesome book BESTEST. RAMADAN. EVER.

What is your favorite word?
Defenestration. I like how it sounds, even though the definition is grisly. It’s the act of throwing a person or thing out of a window.

What is your least favorite word?
Ooze. It’s grossly onomatopoeic, even though someone might ooze after being defenestrated.

What turns your current MC on?
Hot boys and drama (as in acting).

What turns your current MC off?
Racists, bad hair, and parents.

What sound do you love?
I love hearing birds chirp. This is a change, because when I was younger I hated that sound. I used to wake up and screech “shut up” to the birds.

What sound do you hate?
It’s not just a sound, but the pervasive throb of bass from neighbors and passing cars. I can usually drown out sound with white noise, but I still feel/hear the bass.

What is your favorite YA quirk?
Since I read so much, my current reads are what I usually remember. Reading Arlaina Tibensky’s AND THEN THINGS FALL APART, at first I didn’t get why the MC used the term “sofa king” all the time. Later on I realized why she used that phrase sofa king much.

What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
I’m an amateur artist. I used to paint and sketch a lot, but pretty much stopped after high school. Now I rarely pick up a brush or pencil. It’s mainly an issue with time.

What profession would you rather bathe in a vat of hot cheese than attempting?
Anything athletic. I lack coordination in most sports. I was always one of those kids who was picked last for the team in PE classes.

If John Green exists and sits at your table at a SCBWI conference, what would you like him to say to you?
I would like him to tell me something that he’s never told anyone before. I appreciate things like that…and then it’s coming from John Green!

Thank you for stopping by Medeia!!!

I've never heard of defenestration. That would be a fun one to use on someone. (To threaten to do, no actually do.) It sounds worse than it is.

And Christa-I have to say, these are some pretty unique questions. I'm pretty sure I've never seen, "What profession would you rather bathe in a vat of hot cheese than attempting?" in any other author interviews.

I've never heard of that word either! THanks for teaching me something :)

And I also agree with Suzi. Most interesting interview EVER ladies! :) Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Medeia! I love the new word that I'll be using whenever possible. Defenestration is what I think about a lot. Should I admit that? Not that I would actually do it...

Loved the interview.

I'm sure you're not that uncoordinated! Now I'm going to see if I can use defenestrated today.

I LOVED And Then Things Fall Apart, it was one of my favorite reads from last year. I'm curious on the author's book, I'll have to check it out on Goodreads :)

Fun questions and equally fun answers. Loving the word defenestration - it'd make a great #15tt word.

Great interview. My dad had birds that chirped all the time. I hated them. =)

I'm right there with you, Medeia, on doing nothing athletic as a job!

And Christa, I love these questions:)

Great interview!

I love your answer to the John Green question. And yeah, bass is one of the worst kinds of outside disturbance.

Thank you for having me here, Christa.

Thank you for your comments, everyone. I'm glad to see I'm not the only nonathletic person in the world and that some of you learned a new word. :)

This is a fun and different author interview. Loved it.

I like that word! I'll have to try using it in a sentence. I might impress some people with it!

You should make some time to draw, too, even if it's just once a week.

One, I didn't know throwing someone out a window had a specific word. Two, bass is totally annoying. And three, total knuckle bump on the lack of coordination thing...I totally stink at sports too!

A very unique set of questions...
I love the sound of 'defenestration'!
I'm also a non-sporty kind of a person. When we were in high school, I was the one who would do anything to get out of Phys Ed classes...
I have to admit that I love the throbbing bass sound (but not when it's overdone, of course...)

Love this Medeia and Christa. Ooze. That one's going to haunt me for a while. Don't put me on the drawing list because I just ordered this book. Can't wait to read it. Medeia, don't give up on the art, I had to put it down for about a decade, but eventually got to a place where I found time for it again. :0)
