It's important to learn to be content. To work hard and appreciate that no, not everyone will love or even notice your stuff, but at least you're making a difference with your creativity. It really matters to not always focus on ourselves. This especially hit home for me as I read: "At the end of the day, writers need to remember that they created something and it is a thing that some people will love and some people will hate and some people will never know even existed and really that's okay. Go about the business of being you. Find success in the little things. Be grateful and compassionate. Live as fully as you can. That is enough of a gift to this world."

Thank you for putting it so beautifully! I'm so happy you had someone compliment your book and help lift your spirits!Cortney Pearsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00774060537148628453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7292808536017608740.post-88952837820106676032014-05-13T09:27:52.721-07:002014-05-13T09:27:52.721-07:00"...apparently the difference between ranking..."...apparently the difference between rankings of 700,000 and 150,000 is like, three books." <---This is why I never did well in math...

The definition of success is something that's come up in my writers group on more than one occasion. We have one member who views success as publication with a Big 6 publisher and a spot on the NYT best seller list. She's honestly bothered by those of us who do not share that same goal. We have members who aren't interested in publication at all—they just want to write a good story and share it with this particular group—and that does not compute with her.

But saying that and knowing that what you write here is so, so true, I'll still one day be obsessing over Amazon rankings.M.J. That little Amazon number can be so hard to ignore, but it's so much more important to focus on what success really means...and that has nothing to do with a number. I said to remember that your worth as a writer, story teller and person in general is not determined by your Amazon rank. I know it's hard to remember sometimes, but I remind myself of that a lot.
